A Beloved Educator With A Lasting Impact
Dr. Michael LaGory, a renowned teacher at ‘Iolani School since 1984, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2023 at the age of 69. To honor his memory and continue the work he did to change students' lives in significant ways, 'Iolani School will establish an endowed scholarship fund bearing his name.
He was born on May 9, 1954, in Bethesda, Maryland, but raised in Ewa Beach. After graduating from Campbell High School in 1971, he earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Dr. LaGory began his teaching career at UCSB before returning to Hawai‘i, where he taught at Campbell High and Chaminade University prior to his arrival at ‘Iolani School.
In addition to teaching various courses, including AP English, Dr. LaGory wrote the Keables Guide, which has supported ‘Iolani teachers and students since 1997. First in print and now online, the Keables Guide is true to the writing philosophy and teaching method of legendary teacher Harold Keables. It will continue to improve student writing long into the future.
